Palm2000

Where portability is an advantage, schools can provide Palm2000s to their teachers and administrators. Pocket PCs are an alternate to Palm2000s. Attendance and grades can be managed on Palm2000. Email and circulars can be sent and received on Palm2000s. They provide a window's 'look and feel' that everyone is familiar with. Teachers can start using them without any training, in a few minutes

about 3" by 4" and half an inch thick

Palm2000s are small, light, portable devices the size and weight of a pack of cards. They fit into shirt pockets and handbags. Palm2000s boot up in about a second, without delay. Palm2000s do not contract viruses. The model we selected is Palm IIIXE, a black-white model with a large screen, which teachers prefer. Teachers have constant access to student's records. Attendance (and grades) are entered and reviewed in much the same way as teachers enter them using a traditional register and pen. The list of students is displayed on the Palm2000. Teachers simply 'tap' Present, Late or Absent status. Reasons for absence can also be selected from a list. This list is provided by the DfES (Department of Education and Skills).

Several teachers can update the database at the same time, each taking about 3 to 5 seconds. Palm2000s update School2000 in one of the following ways
  • Palm2000s can be placed on their cradles (connected to a PC) and the 'Hot-Sync' button is clicked
  • The same can be done with a cable connected to a PCs/Laptop that is networked to the School2000 server
  • IrDA (Infrared) transceivers could be placed in classrooms, along corridors, stairs, staff-rooms and entrances to update School2000
The cost of each Palm2000 is about £30 at the time of writing. They can be purchased from Amazon or eBuyer. The cradle is about £100 and connects to a serial port of a PC. If IrDA update is required please contact us for price and availability
